Useful Landmines

Tricks to force you to shift gears, to achieve balance in your daily routine. See also Procrastination.

Useful landmines are tricks that make it virtually impossible to fail at something, or ways to enforce some kind of arbitrary limitation on yourself. In general, they are a way to ensure that you simply don't allow yourself to do something you know you shouldn't do or to unfailingly remember to do something you must.

Simple examples:

  • pinning a note from school to a child's sweater
  • clipping your mittens to your sleeves
  • putting your briefcase in front of your door
  • putting your car keys in your shoe at the gym locker

  • Buy a wireless, rechargeable mouse. When it runs out of juice, it's time to hang up the mouse and tackle some dead-tree paperwork and/or reading. --AP 20:40, 16 Apr 2005 (EDT)
    • Might not be the best idea to get a quality one though, my Logitech MX700 will run for about a week between charges...

  • If you're zoning out to some boob-tube, set the Sleep timer, even if you're not going to sleep. You're setting yourself a limit. (This is also great for reminding you to check on: the washer/dryer cycle, the roasting turkey, etc...
    • Set the show to record. When you wake up you can see the ending right away or when you are well-rested.

  • Get one or more really obnoxiously loud portable alarm clocks. You should be able to find something really cheap that you can hear from across your house/office. Make sure it annoys the hell out of you when you hear it. When you know you have to stop whatever it is you're working on and go do something else, put that something else (or a note representing it) in another room with one of these little annoying clocks and set the alarm for whatever time you know you need to get to it. When it goes off, you'll have to get up and leave whatever you're doing to shut it up.     • When traveling, set the alarm in your cell phone. It will turn itself on and wake you up. -- kcowan 03:58, 23 Dec 2006 (PST)
