Total Commander is a great replacement for Windows Explorer, the built in Windows file manager. It is preferred by many system admins which have to handle a lot of file operations.

Total Commander belongs to a class of file managers with two windows side by side, also called the "Commander"-style, after the very first program in its class: Norton Commander. Their advantage over classic one window file managers is the ability to use keyboard for file management. (Two panel file managers are also known as OFM or Orthodox File Managers. )

Features include:

  • tabbed interface
  • various archive handling plugins
  • built-in FTP client
  • multi-rename tool: Allows to rename multiple files in one step
  • compare files by content.
  • history favorites buttons
  • enhanced search function ( regular expressions)
