Mosquitoes [1] are believed to have evolved around 170 million years ago during the Jurassic era.

What is known to work

  • Deet will work but at high levels will cause damage to your brain.
  • Mosquito netting.
  • Removing all standing water near your home.
  • Fans. Mosquitoes will be blown away by fans. This works. But, obviously, you would need a lot of fans. It may be helpful to place a fan in front of your entrance door blowing out toward the yard. This will create a kind of air lock so you can get in and out without letting in a lot of mosquitoes.

What may work

  • Mosquito-abatement systems, these are machines that attract mosquitoes with carbon dioxide and then kill the insect with fire or electricity. May attract mosquitoes that were not headed for your yard in the first place. May be an exercise in futility.
  • Citronella candles will repell mosquitoes. But you will need a lot. You will need to be right next to the candle to benefit. Or you can make a perimeter of candles around your entrance to repell mosquitoes from coming in your door when you go in and out.
  • Mosquito buzzers. These are devices that make a sound like a male insect, this is supposed to repell the pregnant females (the only mosquito that bites) because she will not want anything to do with a male. My local outfitter tells me that his clients have a 50/50 response to these. Half of people love them, half think they don't work.

Camping strategies

  1. Set up your tent. Zip every zipper up tight.
  2. When you are ready to sleep, first take a pee so you won't have to later.
  3. Enter your tent, zipping every zipper behind you tightly.
  4. There will be at least 3 mosquitoes in your tent. Take some time and kill them all.
  5. Now you can sleep.
