Speaking of displacement activity, i have been wondering about bringing it up here, but i am not confident enough yet to hit up a new page and probably haven't looked around enough to figure where it fits in. It's something i often find myself doing... distracting myself from the real matters at hand, and i know a real problem keeping control of for many... particuly for people working mainly from home where there are so many distractions.

Here is the entry i actually kicked of on wikipedia.org, it obviousley needs a bit of work. I think the most important point is it doesn't always equate to being a bad thing:

Displacement activity

Displacement activities are things you do when you're thinking, perhaps unconsciously, about something else. They are deeply embedded in animal consciousness. They most probably evolved as a way to avoid dangerous mental bugs. By making animals sometimes decide to do things that don't address their immediate needs, displacement activities ensure that animals don't completely neglect low-priority essentials (grooming their fur, or preening their feathers) even when they are hungry or anxious. Displacement activities like doodling can be essential for creativity and indispensable for calm. Don't overlook their value as stress busters, and don't feel guilty for using displacement activities. Organizing your notes, or adding metadata -- dates, illustrations, page numbers -- can give you time to mull over a problem or to reach a satisfactory but difficult decision.

However, if you have just found yourself here having spent an hour or two flicking around the web instead of writing that proposal you've spent a month researching for the important meeting the next morning it's time to recognise it for what it is and stop.

Displacement activity in animal behaviour is an action that is performed out of its normal context while the animal is in a state of stress, frustration, or uncertainty. Birds, for example, often peck at grass when uncertain whether to attack or flee from an opponent; similarly, humans scratch their heads when nervous. Or alphabetise their C.D collection, the re-alphabetise it Aa Ba etc, then re-alphabetise to record titles rather than artists. Or in really bad cases, look up "Displacement activity" on Wikipedia and upon finding no entry, then procceed to write one instead of fixing a bug on their own website.
