[edit] wheeled luggage
re wheeled luggage, when it comes to short trips, anyone have tips on their cousin, the backpack (possibly one optimized to carry a laptop)? --ecm 03:06, 26 Mar 2005 (EST)
re wheeled luggage, I carry two bags, a backpack, and a briefcase/shoulder bag. The shoulder bag also has a handle to be carried like a normal briefcase, and has straps to wear as a back as well, though I don't use it that way. I wear the backpack and alternate between carrying the other bag on my shoulder or by hand. They are both small enough that I can lug them both through the airport without killing my back too bad. --raster 10:39, 29 Mar 2005 (EST)
I also don't agree with wheeled luggage. If you have a back problem it may be a requirement but I prefer travel packs. They can be worn as a backpack (the straps can tuck away), a shoulder strap or handle. I'm very fond of Patagonia's [MLC] (Maximum Legal Carryon). If you carry a lot of heavy items/electronics you might want something with a little more support though. I found this to be much better when traveling in Europe and Japan due to the large number of stairs and rough surfaces. If you plan on a lot of walking and can pack light, hiking day packs within carryon limits could make a good choice.
I also don't agree about wheeled luggage. I am a big fan of packs (often "travel packs" but could also be backpacks) with a reasonable suspension, with no more than 3500 cubic inches. The suspension means that you can walk miles with these packs (without bending over a piece of wheeled luggage, maneouvering it crowds, or hauling something using relatively weak arm and back muscles over cobble stones, curbs, stairs, etc..). The size means that you absolutely have to be ruthless in packing. My current favorite is the Ramble from MountainSmith, although I've also liked some of the EagleCreek products. It has been great for me to avoid Taxis and to see cities while walking to have a pack like this. Anyway, I'm entering this here in the Talk section because I don't want to mess up the nicely written stuff on the main page. I wonder, though, whether we ought to include a "packs" section or a small discussion of when wheeled luggage might be great (when you are traveling between places where the ground is flat, you don't have to walk far outside, and you are happy with taxis) and when packs might be better (when you have to go up and down stairs to subways, when you have to walk far, when the ground is uneven).?? --Jake 14:03, 29 Apr 2005 (EDT)
Check out the Samsonite Manuever line of wheeled luggage. It's got wheels that roll either along the long side and the short sides. Samsonite Manuever

What, we've fixed on US spelling? --RB 06:24, 6 Apr 2005 (EDT)
[edit] Less US-specific advice needed
I have just been through several sections of this page making it clear when certain tips that might work in the US most assuredly do not work in other countries. (I was also the person who wrote about Australian quarantine restrictions and sniffer beagles.) I think we need to be alert to tips that would get non-US readers, or US readers travelling abroad, into trouble.
On a related note, would it be helpful to set up links to carry-on limits/check-in requirements pages on airlines' web sites? These are often not easy to find from the airlines' front pages. I listed a few to indicate which budget airlines have strict rules about late arrivals. Should such things go on subsidiary pages? --Elisha-B 2:33pm, 10 Apr 2005 (AEST)
[edit] Refactoring?
Does anyone else think that Travel Hacks is getting towards deserving to be its own category? The other "Hacks" categories each have less than half the number of tips we have in here (23). Absent any severe protests, I'll start refactoring later today. --Fraserspeirs 05:41, 26 May 2005 (EDT)
Update: Done. I created the Category:Travel Hacks category and left links in here to where the content went. Not sure if we should just redirect this page to the category page? --Fraserspeirs 12:06, 28 May 2005 (EDT)
Yeah, this page should probably be redirected now, so folks don't keep entering info twice, or only once here instead of adding the Category tag. --AP 13:04, 17 Jul 2005 (EDT)
