I've just set up some GTD folders with Bonsai, and discovered a neat trick in the item properties tab...

You can set any item to be a "Parent of Next Actions items". What this means is that just the next item in a project can be shown in a filter. On the Option tab of the filter selection dialog, you can choose "Limit view to Next Action item for Next Action branches". The next action can be based on Start Date, Due Date, Priority or (my recommendation) Sibling Order. You can even flatten the list, so that you get a 'current to do list' incorporating all the next actions in all projects.
