[edit] Description
Pine is a classic text-based email client, known and loved by many, and developed by the University of Washington.
Pine may seem obsolete to some, especially since there are numerous GUI mail clients for just about every platform nowadays. But sometimes one finds oneself jonesing for the sheer text-crunching power of this very capable tool.
[edit] Hacks
- Paul Heinlein has assembled some excellent instructions for installing Pine on OS X. And things get really fun when you then apply O'Reilly's instructions for interleaving Mail.app and Pine. (Note: This tip only works for 10.3 (Panther). The Mail.app included with OS X 10.4 (Tiger) stores each email message as a discrete text file (to aid in Spotlight-style searching) instead of a Pine-style mbox file.)
