Ecco Pro is a long abandoned personal information manager for Windows. The fact that there is a substantial Ecco user community eight years after its demise is a testament to the quality of the application.

The program is now freely available (although not open source). The Ecco group on Yahoo has produced a number of useful utilities, including a GTD template that could easily serve as a prototype for development of new GTD applications.

Ecco is essentially an outliner at heart. The core functionality of Ecco is built around the concepts of lists and folders. Any given Ecco file can have an unlimited number of lists stored in a user defined folder hierarchy. Lists can have columns (similar to OmniOutliner), but the columns have super-powers that allow users to assign values that can send each list item to one or more folders as desired. Combine this functionality with an integrated calendar and address book and you have what pretty much amounts to the GTD holy grail (except for the part where the program hasn't been updated in nearly a decade).

In some respects, Ecco could act as a roadmap for future development of a product like OmniOutliner. I know several Ecco users who would gladly jump to Mac if they found an application with equivalent functionality.

There still is one active developer of fixes, add-ons and freeware utilities for the program EccoMagic.com. Most of the software is not 'advertised' but can be found in the EccoMagic forums' download section.
