Carpal Tunnel Syndrome [1] causes symptoms like tingling, numbness, night time wakening, pain, coldness, and sometimes weakness in parts of the hand.

[edit] Prevention

  • When typing or using a mouse, your arm, wrist and hand should be in a straight line. this will prevent the carpal nerve from being pinched and causing pain and numbness. Adjust your chair and desk to make this happen.
  • Avoid putting pressure on the heel of your hand when your wrist is bent. This will pinch off the nerve.
  • Avoid using a computer mouse. Instead, use a notebook tablet that allows you to write directly on the computer screen or use a graphic tablet with a pressure-sensitive pen.

  • Wearing a wrist brace at night and during the activity causing the CTS brings some relief (prevents pinching by keeping the sheath around the nerve in a straight line). Wearing a wrist brace can also help train you to keep your wrist and arm in a straight line. Wearing a wrist brace continuously is not advised - it could lead to atrophy of the muscles.
