Bookdarts are essentially fancy bookmarks.

Bookdarts are small, flat pieces of metal, folded over such that they can be slipped onto the edge of a printed page and stay in place. The advantage of a bookdart over a regular bookmark is that a bookdart indicates an exact line in the book, whereas a conventional bookmark really only marks a pair of pages. Thus the reader can locate the correct spot more quickly and resume reading. Another advantage is that bookdarts are much less likely to fall out accidentally.

In theory, bookdarts and be placed and removed without harming the page. In practice, placing and removing bookdarts requires care with some books.
